New AI video models usually arrive with a launch video and a waitlist. HappyHorse-1.0 arrived as a nameless entry on a leaderboard — and the reveal that followed is worth retelling, because it explains why this model's reputation runs ahead of its documentation.
The timeline
April 7, 2026. A model labeled only "HappyHorse-1.0" appears on the Artificial Analysis Video Arena — the blind-comparison leaderboard where visitors vote between two unlabeled clips. Within days of accumulating votes it holds #1 in both Text-to-Video and Image-to-Video (no audio), displacing models from labs with thousand-person teams.
April 8–9. Speculation runs through AI Twitter and Reddit: the model generates audio with its video, natively — lip-synced dialogue included. The gallop-themed name spawns theories from every lab with an animal codename tradition.
April 10. CNBC and others confirm it: HappyHorse-1.0 is Alibaba's, built by the company's ATH AI Innovation Unit. The company simultaneously publishes architecture details — a ~15B-parameter single-stream transformer generating audio and video in one forward pass — and announces open-source plans.
Why the debut mattered
Three things made this launch different from the usual model-of-the-month cycle:
- Blind votes came first. The ranking existed before the marketing did. Whatever you think of arena methodology, nobody voted for a brand.
- Native audio changed the demo format. Clips circulating that week had synchronized dialogue and sound effects with no post-production — something viewers hadn't seen from a single model pass.
- It reset the China-lab narrative. Coming weeks after ByteDance's Seedance 2.0 set the previous bar, April 2026 established that the frontier of video generation was being contested primarily between two Chinese labs.
